This resolution will amend the City of Milwaukee's State Legislative Package to express support for passage of 2025 AB125/SB135, legislation creating a special observance day in honor of Vel R. Phillips.

Body

Whereas, Vel R. Phillips was the first Black woman to graduate from the University of Wisconsin Law School; and

 

Whereas, Vel R. Phillips was the first woman and the first African-American elected to the Milwaukee Common Council; and

 

Whereas, Vel R. Phillips was the first Black judge in Wisconsin; and

 

Whereas, Vel R. Phillips was the first woman and the first African-American elected to serve as Secretary of State; and

 

Whereas, 2025 AB125/SB135 proposes to make February 18, Vel R. Phillips birthday, a special observance day in Wisconsin schools; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City of Milwaukee’s legislative package is amended to express support for the passage of 2025 AB125/SB135, legislation creating a special observance day in honor of Vel R. Phillips.
