This resolution expresses the City of Milwaukee’s solidarity with its Asian-American and Pacific Islander residents and condemns all acts of violence directed against the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community.
Body
Whereas, On March 16, 2021, eight people tragically lost their lives in a series of shootings at Atlanta-area spas; and

Whereas, South Korea’s foreign ministry stated that four of the women who died were of Korean origin, and six of the women were Asian-American; and

Whereas, Protests were held in cities across the U.S. demanding an end to anti-Asian violence and hate crimes, which have soared during the COVID-19 pandemic; and

Whereas, Anti-Asian xenophobia has increased in the wake of former President Trump and other Republican leaders frequently referring to the Coronavirus as the “China virus” or “Kung flu,” even after the phrases had been decried as racist; and

Whereas, Stop AAPI Hate is a coalition that tracks different forms of hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States, and reported nearly 3,800 incidents nationwide since the start of the pandemic; and

Whereas, Many in the Asian-American and Pacific Islander community are deeply concerned about the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and increased anti-Asian sentiment; and

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee is likewise concerned about rising anti-Asian sentiment and hate crimes and is committed to keeping its residents safe from hate crimes; now, therefore, be it
