Whereas, A nurse who worked at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement immigration detention center in Georgia recently filed a whistleblower complaint alleging that immigrant women held at the detention center received hysterectomies without their consent; and
Whereas, A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of a woman’s uterus, and eliminates any possibility of conceiving a child; and
Whereas, The allegations stem from a 27-page complaint compiled by Project South, an Atlanta-based advocacy group, along with Georgia Detention Watch, Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights and South Georgia Immigrant Support Network; and
Whereas, More than 170 members of the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate are calling for the Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general to investigate these claims; and
