Title

Resolution relating to the display of an Hispanic Heritage flag.

Analysis

This resolution authorizes an Hispanic Heritage flag to be flown, hung or displayed at City buildings and facilities each year during the City’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Body

Whereas, Hispanic Heritage Month is a month-long celebration in the United States that recognizes and honors the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America; and

 

Whereas, Hispanic Heritage Month starts September 15 and runs through October 15 each year; and

 

Whereas, Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 because that date marks the independence anniversaries of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua; and

 

Whereas, Avanzando was founded in the summer of 2019 and is a City of Milwaukee Employee Resource Group  <https://city.milwaukee.gov/DER/benefits/Employee-Resource-Group-ERG>dedicated to the advancement and inclusion of the Hispanic/Latinx community within the City of Milwaukee; and

 

Whereas, Avanzando has chosen a flag that is inclusive of all Hispanic communities and is gifting the flag to the City of Milwaukee; and

 

Whereas, The flag serves as a symbol of unity and pride and a reminder of the resilience, strength and achievements of Hispanic communities; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Hispanic Heritage flag gifted to the City of Milwaukee by Avanzando may be flown, hung or displayed at City buildings and facilities each year during the City’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
