Analysis

This resolution directs the Department of Neighborhood Services to prioritize spending of at least $600,000 of demolition funding on areas of concentrated blight.

Body

Whereas, The 2024 Budget allocates $3,064,000 for targeted demolitions by the Department of Neighborhood Services; and

 

Whereas, These funds translate into the demolition of approximately 180 properties; and

 

Whereas, Allocating funds for demolition of properties in the areas of the most concentrated blight will focus the City’s efforts on the most distressed neighborhoods and speed the recovery of these neighborhoods; and

 

Whereas, An allocation of $600,000 would translate into approximately 35 total demolitions in areas of concentrated blight; and

 

Whereas, The 2024 Budget was adopted by Common Council File Number 230001 on November 3, 2023; and

 

Whereas, Amendment 50 placed a footnote in the 2024 Budget “directing DNS to prioritize spending at least $600,000 on areas with concentrated blight”; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Neighborhood Services is directed to prioritize spending of at least $600,000 of demolition funding on areas of concentrated blight; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Department of Neighborhood Services shall present a finalized plan and progress report on the prioritization to the Common Council within 6 months of adoption of this resolution.
