Analysis

This resolution designates a portion of the Walker’s Point neighborhood and surrounding areas as a Milwaukee Innovation District.

Body

Whereas, Innovation districts are emerging neighborhoods characterized by new models of entrepreneurship, research, design, technology development, and collaboration between public and private sectors; and

 

Whereas, Designating an innovation district in the city of Milwaukee represents a critical first step towards building a dynamic, 21st-century urban economy; and

 

Whereas, The proximity of schools, business innovators, and incubators in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point to public services, mass transportation, mixed-use housing and zoning, popular neighborhood amenities, and unique historic architecture provides the prerequisites for an innovation district; and

 

Whereas, A unique combination of talented workers, visionary founders and investors, and dedicated community advocates in Walker’s Point have already established and grown a dynamic scene of tech startups and renewed interest from established companies; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the portion of Walker’s Point and surrounding areas delineated on the attached map is designated a Milwaukee Innovation District; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Common Council intends to take further action to define and incentivize the development and enrichment of innovation districts.
