Title

Substitute resolution relating to City of Milwaukee participation in the Swimmable Cities alliance.

Analysis

This resolution directs the Department of Administration - Environmental Collaboration Office to take the actions necessary for the City to become a signatory to the Swimmable Cities charter and report on the status of the City’s application within 120 days of the adoption of this resolution.

Body

Whereas, Swimmable Cities was launched in 2024 on the eve of the Paris Olympics; and

 

Whereas, Swimmable Cities supports a grassroots movement that includes 153 signatory organizations from 83 cities and towns and 30 countries; and

 

Whereas, Swimmable Cities is working to develop a set of common principles to empower decision-makers and advocates in their work to develop swimmable natural waterways; and

 

Whereas, Urban swimming is a unique expression of life in cities and communities, reflecting the interplay of sports, recreation and tourism; and

 

Whereas, Milwaukee is located at the confluence of the Milwaukee River, the Menomonee River and the Kinnickinnic River; and

 

Whereas, Each sunrise over Lake Michigan brings a new dawn to the community; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Administration - Environmental Collaboration Office is directed to take the appropriate actions for the City of Milwaukee to become a signatory of the Swimmable Cities charter; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Department of Administration - Environmental Collaboration Office shall report on the status of the City’s application to Swimmable Cities within 120 days of adoption of this resolution.
