Title
Resolution recognizing and expressing the CIty of Milwaukee's support for Pride Month 2021.
Analysis
This resolution recognizes and expresses the CIty of Milwaukee's support for Pride Month, an annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and an opportunity to reflect on the struggles confronted by that community past, present, and future.
Body
Whereas, On June 28, 1969, officers of the New York Police Department descended on Greenwich Village's Stonewall Inn, an establishment known to be frequented by members of that city's LGBTQ+ community; and
Whereas, The violent and unjust treatment of those at the Stonewall Inn prompted several days of public resistance, but, more consequentially, planted the seeds of the first LGBTQ+ liberation movement in the United States; and
Whereas, The one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising was marked by the first gay pride marches in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco; and
Whereas, The Uprising and the movement it inspired gave birth to a liberation movement that has made monumental strides towards guaranteeing the rights of all LGBTQ+ persons, including the United States Supreme Court's landmark Obergefell v. Hodges, which secured for same-sex couples the right to marry; and
Whereas, Despite this progress, many, including some within the federal government and even the state legislature of the State of Wisconsin, would deny the fundamental rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ persons, notably those who identify as transgender; and
Whereas, Sexual violence, particularly directed at LGBTQ+ persons of color, continues to occur at a rate far greater than that in the broader community; and
Whereas, Bisexual persons, though they constitute the largest single group within the LGBTQ+ community are often over-looked -- erased -- and their struggles and experiences are diminished by too many; and
Whereas, It is right and fitting that the CIty of Milwaukee stands shoulder-to-shoulder with its LGBTQ+ residents and commits itself to continued progress towards achieving equal rights for this and all communities; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the CIty of Milwaukee, That the City of Milwaukee recognizes and expresses its support for Pride Month 2021 and urges all residents to rejoice in the achievements of the past and commit themselves to working collaboratively for a more fundamentally just society.
