The most significant owners, occupants, or contributors of note for the house were George Knowles, Jr. and the Community of Saint Martha. The current owner is Susan Ellman and her family. Detailed information regarding Ms. Hatala’s overview can be found in the study report within the file. Ms. Hatala said that staff recommends that the George Knowles, Jr. House be given historic designation as a City of Milwaukee Historic Site as a result of its fulfillment of criteria e 1 and e 5 and e 9 of the Historic Preservation Ordinance, Section 320 21(3) of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances. Mr. Williams moved to open the meeting to the public, seconded by Ms. Nemec. There were no objections. Susan Ellman, 1879 N. Cambridge Avenue, appeared and gave supplemental information on the history and occupancy of the house. Detailed information regarding Ms. Ellman’s testimony can be found within the file. Ms. Nemec moved to close the meeting to the public, seconded by Mr. Williams. There were no objections. Ms. Nemec moved approval, seconded by Mr. Bryant, for historic designation of the Georges Knowles, Jr. House at 1879 N. Cambridge Avenue based on criteria e 1, e 5, and e 9. There were no objections. Analysis

This resolution designates the George Knowles, Jr. House at 1879 N. Cambridge Avenue, in the 3rd Aldermanic District, as a City of Milwaukee Historic Site.

...Body

Whereas, The Milwaukee Historic Preservation Ordinance, s. 320-21 of the Code of Ordinances, provides that historic sites, structures and districts may be designated by the Common Council upon the recommendation of the Historic Preservation Commission; and

Whereas, The Historic Preservation Commission, at its January 14, 2013 meeting, voted unanimously to recommend permanent designation of the George Knowles, Jr. House at 1879 N. Cambridge Avenue as a historic site;

Whereas, This site possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and association and fulfills the following criterion set forth in s. 320-21(3):

e-1. Its exemplification and development of the cultural, economic, social or historic heritage of the city, state of Wisconsin or the United States.

e-5. Its embodiment of the distinguishing characteristics of an architectural type or specimen.

e-9. Its unique location as a singular physical characteristic which represents an

established and familiar visual feature of a neighborhood, community or the city.

; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the George Knowles, Jr. House at 1879 N. Cambridge Avenue, and further described as follows:

Tax Key No. 3550034000, Cambridge Subd Part Lot 6 Sec 21 & Lots 15-16 Blk 198 Rogers' Addn in NE & SE 1/4 Sec 21-7-22 Block 242 Lot 4

be designated as a Milwaukee historic site. The Preservation Guidelines pursuant to the Historic Designation Study Report, a copy of which is attached to this file, shall apply to this site and is adopted by the Common Council as part of this file.
