Title

Substitute Resolution relating to the selection of outside counsel for the purpose of advising the City concerning nuisance levels of automobile thefts.

Analysis

This resolution authorizes the City Attorney to retain outside counsel for the purpose of pursuing all potential remedies for damages suffered by the City of Milwaukee as a result of nuisance levels of automobile theft. 

Body

 

Whereas, Motor vehicle thefts have been increasing nationwide; and

 

Whereas, The National Insurance Crime Bureau found that Milwaukee had the eighth-highest motor vehicle theft rate of any U.S. city in 2021; and

 

Whereas, The National Insurance Crime Bureau reported that Milwaukee experienced the highest increase in vehicle thefts from 2020 to 2021 in the nation; and

 

Whereas, The loss of a motor vehicle can cause extreme hardship for the vehicle’s owner; and

 

Whereas, Many stolen cars are used to commit other crimes; and

 

Whereas, Motor vehicle thefts are a significant burden on law enforcement and can threaten public safety; and

 

Whereas, Motor vehicle thefts can cause damage to public infrastructure and private property; and

 

Whereas, Many motor vehicle thefts can be attributed to manufacturers’ design flaws; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Office of the City Attorney is authorized to retain outside counsel to pursue all potential remedies for damages suffered by the City of Milwaukee as a result of nuisance levels of automobile theft.
