This resolution directs the proper City officials to take the actions necessary to ensure that the MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary is included as a participating recipient of donations in the annual City of Milwaukee Combined Giving Campaign.
Body
Whereas, The City’s Combined Giving Campaign is an annual fund drive in which City employees pool their resources to improve the quality of life in the Milwaukee community by contributing to umbrella groups of local nonprofit agencies, individual agencies within those umbrella groups, various designated unaffiliated agencies or other qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that provide health or human services in Wisconsin; and
Whereas, The MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary is a nonprofit dedicated to offering a daytime sanctuary and multi-resource center for homeless and at-risk homeless individuals, with core values of community, healing, spirituality, recovery, peer empowerment, dignity, advocacy, voice, solidarity and mutual transformation; and
Whereas, The Ministry provides services to homeless and at-risk residents citywide, with an emphasis on the 53206 ZIP code, the most-impoverished neighborhood in the state of Wisconsin, where the Ministry is located; and
Whereas, The Ministry’s current programs include employment and legal services, weekly trauma reversal activities, 12-Step AA recovery group, craft and game tables, free Friday meal program, Sunday clothes distribution and fresh produce distribution; and
Whereas, Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ministry has provided approximately 200 households and individuals with essentials, including food, hygiene products, coats, blankets, space heaters, fans, air conditioners and bicycles; and
Whereas, The Ministry provides an onsite nursing presence and has actively promoted information about COVID-19 vaccinations while distributing over 7,000 face masks; and
Whereas, The MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary will soon be opening a new welcome and service center for adults in crisis at 2461 West Center Street; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the proper City officials are directed to take the actions necessary to ensure that the MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary is included as a participating recipient of donations in future City of Milwaukee Combined Giving Campaigns.
