HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION
|
Minutes note: Mr. Tim Askin said the Commission only hears roofs when a change of materials is proposed. The roof was cedar shingle in 1910 and that is assumed to be the original roof. In 1951, it was asbestos tile, which remained in the 1980s. The present cedar shingle roof was installed in 1991 and is at the end of its lifespan. The owners would like to install a single shingle roof. The garage roof also needs to be re-done and asphalt shingle is acceptable for that building.
Mary and Matthew Flynn - owner - the front of the house is deteriorated due to the sun and the majority of roofs in the neighborhood are asphalt. Three roofing companies recommended asphalt as the quality of cedar shake roofing isn't as high as it was in the 1990s.
Ald. Bauman sees no issue with the asphalt. Staff recommends denial as this house has never had an asphalt roof of any kind.
Mr. Jarosz finds asphalt acceptable.
Replace with asphalt.
