This resolution directs the Health Department to develop a water filter distribution plan, and report the plan to the Common Council by March 31, 2019

Body

Whereas, Thousands of Milwaukee households are connected to water mains with lead service lines; and

 

Whereas, Lead from lead water service lines is known to leach into and contaminate water which remains stationary in lead service lines for several hours; and

 

Whereas, Exposure to lead in drinking water poses a threat to the health of household members consuming it, especially young children, pregnant women and breastfed infants; and

 

Whereas, The most reliable method of preventing exposure to lead in drinking water is to obtain and install a water filter certified to eliminate lead, and change filters as recommended; and

 

Whereas, Many households connected to water mains by lead service lines lack the means to readily afford the purchase of a water filter certified to eliminate lead in water; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Health Department is directed to develop a plan for the distribution of water filters to Milwaukee residents at risk of exposure to lead in their drinking and cooking water; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, The Health Department shall collaborate with the Milwaukee Water Works as needed in developing its water filter distribution plan to exploit any possible distribution synergies; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, The department shall report the nature and details of this plan to the Common Council by March 31, 2019.
