Resolution authorizing acceptance and funding of a State of Wisconsin Stewardship grant.
Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Department of Public Works to accept and fund a Stewardship grant in the amount of $250,000 from the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. This is a matching grant requiring that the City contribute an equal amount. The grant combined with the City match will be used to construct a riverwalk connection between the downtown riverwalk system and the new Historic Third Ward riverwalk. The planned connection is expected to cost approximately $500,000.

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee has worked cooperatively with both the Downtown Riverwalk Business Improvement District (BID #15) and the Historic Third Ward Business Improvement District (BID #2) on the planning, funding, and construction of riverwalks in their respective areas; and

Whereas, These two riverwalk systems are intended to eventually provide a continuous, handicap accessible walkway from the lakefront to the downtown area and beyond; and

Whereas, A convenient, handicap accessible connection between the two riverwalk systems does not yet exist; and

Whereas, In June of 2003 the Milwaukee Common Council adopted Resolution Number 030205 authorizing application to the State of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for a Stewardship Local Assistance Program matching grant in the amount of $250,000; and

Whereas, This grant, if approved, would be combined with the required local match to build a handicap accessible connection between the downtown riverwalk and Historic Third Ward riverwalk systems; and

Whereas, The Department of Natural Resources has now notified the City that the grant application has been approved; and

Whereas, The grant requires a local match equal to the grant amount (i.e. $250,000); and
