Analysis
This resolution urges the Chief of Police to implement 2 recommendations of the City of Milwaukee Truancy Abatement Task Force, namely:
 
1.  Directing all active, daytime police officers to issue citations or take other action as appropriate against young people found to be unlawfully on the streets during school hours.
2.  Implementing regular, coordinated "truancy sweeps" throughout the City, with particular attention being paid to areas where truants are known to congregate.
 
Body
Whereas, The City of Milwaukee Truancy Abatement Task Force issued its findings and recommendations on September 27, 2002; and
 
Whereas, Among its findings, the Task Force recognized the central role that must be played in any successful truancy abatement effort by the Milwaukee Police Department; and
 
Whereas, Recent efforts by the Milwaukee Police Department to reduce truancy in a small section of the City have been praised not only for making neighborhoods safer, but giving young people a better chance at getting the education they will need to succeed; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Chief of Police is urged to implement the following recommendations of the City of Milwaukee Truancy Abatement Task Force:
 
1.  Directing and encouraging all active, daytime police officers to issue citations or take other action as appropriate against young people found to be unlawfully on the streets during school hours.
