Analysis
This resolution recognizes May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and designates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month as an annual official City event.
Body
Whereas, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is observed each year during the month of May to recognize and celebrate the history, heritage, and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States; and
Whereas, The month of May was selected for this observance in part to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in May 1843 and the completion of the transcontinental railroad in May 1869, to which many Chinese immigrants contributed their labor and sacrifice; and
Whereas, Asian American and Pacific Islander communities represent a rich diversity of cultures, languages, traditions, and histories, and have made lasting contributions to the civic, cultural, economic, educational, and social life of cities and communities throughout the nation, including the City of Milwaukee; and
Whereas, Recognition of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month provides an opportunity to celebrate these contributions, promote greater understanding and appreciation of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and reaffirm the City’s commitment to inclusion, equity, and mutual respect; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the month of May is recognized as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the City of Milwaukee; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Common Council declares Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month to be an official City event.
Further Resolved, That the City Clerk’s Office is authorized to accept contributions to support Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month; and, be it
Further Resolved, That upon receipt and deposit of these funds, the City Comptroller is
authorized and directed to establish a special account within the Common Council-City
Clerk’s budget for the expenditure of the contributions; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Office of the Common Council-City Clerk is authorized to
accept up to $100,000 of contributions for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and to expend such funds for this purpose or any purpose specified by the contribution in accordance with established City policies and procedures.
