Analysis
This resolution directs the Department of City Development, the Department of Neighborhood Services, the City Clerk’s Office License Division, and any other relevant City departments, to develop and present a plan for a one-stop-shop for business owners in need of different City approvals and to report their findings and recommendations to the Common Council.
Body
Whereas, Currently, an individual looking to open a business in Milwaukee may be required to obtain permits, licenses and other approvals from several different City departments; and
Whereas, There is no current mechanism for inter-department communication that ensures a prospective business owner has obtained all of the necessary City approvals for their venture; and
Whereas, Wait times on figuring out what approvals are needed, and from which departments, add to what can already be substantial wait times for individual licenses, permits and approvals; and
Whereas, The 2024 Budget was adopted by Common Council File Number 230001 on November 3, 2023; and
Whereas, Amendment 14 placed a footnote in the 2024 Budget directing “directing the Department of City Development, Department of Neighborhood Services, and License Division of the Common Council-City Clerk to work with relevant parties to develop a plan to centralize approvals for businesses in a one-stop shop”; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of City Development, the Department of Neighborhood Services, the City Clerk’s Office License Division, and any other relevant City departments are directed to develop and present a plan for a one-stop-shop for business owners in need of different City approvals; and, be it
Further Resolved, That that the Department of City Development, the Department of Neighborhood Services, and the City Clerk’s Office License Division shall present the finalized plan to the Common Council within 6 months of adoption of this resolution.
