Title

Substitute resolution establishing an annual citywide high school art competition.

Analysis

This resolution establishes an annual art competition for students enrolled in grades 9-12 in public, private and parochial schools located in the city of Milwaukee, as well as students who are residents of the city of Milwaukee and are enrolled in grades 9-12 in public, private or parochial schools located outside the city of Milwaukee or are home-schooled students.  The Arts Board is authorized and directed to receive the competition submissions, judge the competition and establish the submission deadlines, art categories, selection criteria and any other contest entry rule to be used in holding the citywide high school art competition.  Winners may receive donated cash awards, college scholarships, gift certificates and other prizes, as determined by the Arts Board, and will receive exhibition opportunities at City Hall.

Body

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee is committed to building a vibrant community and providing meaningful and enriching cultural experiences for its citizens and visitors; and

 

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee recognizes that emerging young artists face many challenges in sustaining their creative vision and enthusiasm for the arts; and

 

Whereas, An annual citywide high school art competition would provide an avenue for young artists to receive recognition for their creative achievements, and provide inspiration and validation for the Milwaukee's emerging young artists; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council adopts the following procedures for the holding of an annual citywide high school art competition:

 

1.                     Students enrolled in grades 9-12 in public, private and parochial schools located in the city of Milwaukee, as well as students who are residents of the city of Milwaukee and are enrolled in grades 9-12 in public, private or parochial schools located outside the city of Milwaukee or are home-schooled students, are eligible to participate in the competition.

 

2.                     The Arts Board is authorized and directed to receive the competition submissions and judge the competition, as well as establish the submission deadlines, art categories, judging criteria and any other contest entry rules to be used in holding the citywide high school art competition.

 

3.                     Winners may receive donated cash awards, college scholarships, gift certificates and other prizes, as determined by the Arts Board, and shall receive exhibition opportunities at City Hall.

 

; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That all City departments are authorized and directed to cooperate with and assist the Arts Board in administering the citywide high school art competition; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Common Council encourages all eligible students to participate in the annual citywide high school art competition in order to showcase their artistic talents and help the City of Milwaukee recognize and celebrate its next generation of artists.
