Analysis

This resolution directs the  Department of City Development to work with related regional public and private entities to investigate and prepare recommendations for encouraging remote workers to relocate to Milwaukee

Body

Whereas, The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally altered the way most Americans work; and

Whereas, According to a 2020 survey conducted by Enterprise Technology Research, the percentage of workers around the world working permanently from home is expected to double in 2021; and

Whereas, The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many Americans to reevaluate their living situations; and

Whereas, According to a recent survey conducted by CBRE Group, over the past year, the population cohort with the highest propensity to move has been young, highly-educated urban-dwellers, many of whom have the ability to work remotely; and

Whereas, Milwaukee is a world-class city that boasts unique cultural assets; and

Whereas, Of the 75 largest cities in the United States, Milwaukee ranks 54th for cost of living, placing it among the most-affordable cities; and

Whereas, The Couture expansion of Milwaukee’s HOP streetcar system and creation of MCTS’s new Bus Rapid Transit line along Wisconsin Avenue will continue to enhance Milwaukee’s appeal as a transit-oriented community; and

Whereas, These factors have the potential to make Milwaukee an attractive option as a place of residence for the nation’s growing remote workforce; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of City Development is directed to work with regional partners to develop a strategy for encouraging remote workers to relocate to Milwaukee; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Department of City Development shall present their findings and recommendations within 6 months of adoption of this resolution.
