Title
Substitute resolution relating to departmental investments and commitments to serve Spanish-speaking residents.
Analysis
This resolution directs all City departments to report to the Common Council by May 28, 2026, on investments and commitments the departments have made to serving Spanish-speaking residents.
Body
Whereas, Spanish is the most-commonly spoken language other than English in Milwaukee County, spoken by over 10% of the population; and
Whereas, The vast majority of Spanish-speaking individuals reside within the City of Milwaukee; and
Whereas, All City departments are likely to interact regularly with residents for whom Spanish is their primary language; and
Whereas, The 2026 Budget was adopted by Common Council File Number 250001 on November 7, 2025; and
Whereas, Amendment 106 placed a footnote in the 2026 Budget directing all City departments to report on their investments and commitments to serving the city’s Spanish-speaking residents to the Council by April 1, 2026; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that all City departments are directed to report on their investments and commitments to serving Milwaukee’s Spanish-speaking residents to the Council by May 28, 2026.
