Minutes note: 07 SINGH, Pakhar, Extended Hours Establishment renewal application with change of hours for “Sherman BP” at 3114 N. Sherman Blvd. (Expires 4/30) Special Letter
Applicant at the table, 3114 N. Sherman Blvd. Deborah Moore, Legislative Assistant for District 7, also at the table.
The location is in an area that had problems with cruising during warm weather.
The applicant says that he was not aware that the previous business owners had problems with cruising.
No neighborhood objectors present when called.
Ms. Moore says that Ald. Wade is opposed to the change in hours, and he is concerned that traffic may increase during late night hours if the establishment is open during the warmer months.
Coreell Richardson, 2907 N. 45th St., is in support of the license. He says that he purchases goods there during the extended hours period and never has any problems there.
Hubert Bowie, 3054 N. 74th St., says that the owners call the police when there people loitering in the parking lot during the extended hours period. He says that he is still in the area because his mother lives there.
Melvin Gillespie, 3117 N. Sherman Blvd., block captain for the last sixteen years. He says that the licensee is the first owner of the business location that has cooperated with the neighbors. He also says that the gas station and its lighting is a help to the neighborhood and that there are more problems during the summer when the gas station is closed early.
Ald. Hamilton asked Mr. Gillespie if the block club discussed the business and the safety of the neighborhood at a meeting. He says yes and says that the group discussed how the business increases the safety of the neighborhood. He also says that the bus stops in the area are more of a problem than the gas station.
Betty Campbell, 3139 N. 44th St., is in support of the license. She says that she walks to the establishment at night and feels safe. She also says that she does not believe extending the hours during the summer months would increase cruising in the area.
Ald. Bohl asks Ms. Campbell if she thinks the decrease in cruising is due to the business being closed earlier during warm weather. She says no.
DeVon Gillespie, 3115 N. Sherman Blvd., says that the current owners updated the security system and there is police presence in the area. He does not believe that there will be a problem with the business being open 24 hours.
Sammy Houston, 4236 W. Auer Ave., says that problems in the area have been brought under control and the security at the location is very high-tech. He says that the business being open 24 hours is a help to him and the other residents.
Bupinder Singh, son of the licensee, works at the business during second shift. He says that there is no longer that much cruising in the area and if there is cruising, he has no problem closing the gas station until all the cruisers have dispersed. He says that his night manager has permission to shut down the station and he also says that he can watch the security camera footage from home at any time.
Alderman Hamiton asks the licensee if he has met with the alderman's office, and the licensee says that he has not met with the alderman since last year.
Ms. Moore says that Ald. Wade is not in support of the change in hours because he still has concerns about cruising in the area.
Ald. Hamilton moves to hold the application to the call of the chair so additional feedback can be obtained from other neighborhood residents who may be uncomfortable with an extension in hours.
Ald. Bohl says that the application could be granted as amended, which means that and could be reconsidered at a meeting before the next Common Council.
Ald. Hamilton recinds his motion and moves to amend the application to reflect the previously approved hours. Prevailed 4-0. (Ald. Zielinski excused)
Ald. Wade at the table. He has no problem with the motion.

Applicant at the table, 1432 W. Locust St.
Ald. Bohl asks the licensee what he is doing to prevent crime from occurring at the location during the extended hours. The licensee says that there are three or four cameras outside of the location. He also says that one person is outside the business all the time.
Bechan Singh, 4455 Acre View, Brookfield, is the owner of the property. He says that the licensee is adding more cameras to the outside and there is someone at the business whose only job is two watch the inside and outside of the store during the extended hours.

Ald. Kovac asks if the licensee will feel safe having the establishment open 24 hours. Mr. Singh, the property owner, says that it is safer to be open extended hours because it is completely dark, and therefore less safe for the workers, to close at midnight.
