Ald. Bauman said that he has received complaints about recycling items in the river and eventually making it to the lake.
Ms. Longshore said that they are working on it to stop it, and that it happens when there is backup and that might need a better fencing.
Ald. Borkowski mentioned about trucks collecting shattered glass that is making its way to the streets.
Ms. Longshore said that it's been a while since they have received that kind of complaints but that the crew knows that broken glass should be pulled out to treat it in a different way and reminded people not to throw broken glass from windows because it is not the same kind as the glass containers, and do not to use plastic bags inside the recycling carts.
Ms. Longshore shared the following:
• Residents’ participation in the household recycling program avoided $1,214,433 in landfill disposal costs in 2021 and earned over $2 million in revenue from the sale of recyclables.
• 2021 curbside recycling tonnage was very consistent with 2020 (just a 0.01% decrease). Compared to 2019, 2021 saw an 8.9% increase in curbside recyclables collected, showing the benefit of the every other week collection spring through fall.
