This resolution reaffirms the City’s opposition to Wisconsin Electric Power Company’s and Wisconsin Gas LLC’s joint application to adjust electric, steam, and natural gas rates.

Body

Whereas, Wisconsin Electric Power Company (WEPCO) and Wisconsin Gas LLC applied to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) for authority to adjust electric, steam, and natural gas rates (Docket No. 5-UR-110) in 2022; and

Whereas, By Resolution File Number 220612, on September 9th, 2022, the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee expressed its opposition to the utilities’ requests to increase rates in Docket No. 5-UR-110 in 2022; and

Whereas, WEPCO and Wisconsin Gas LLC applied for a limited reopening of 5-UR-110 to increase electric and gas rates in 2024; and

Whereas, WEPCO’s current electric rates are among the highest in the Midwest; and

Whereas, WEPCO’s proposal is projected to increase rates on residential customers by 3.1 percent on top of the 11.3 percent increase already implemented in January 2023; and

Whereas, The proposed increases will pose a significant hardship on the City’s residents; and

Whereas, The City urges the PSC to scrutinize and reject efforts to shift the burden of facility project cost overruns from shareholders onto customers; and

Whereas, The PSC should not allow WEPCO to reap excessive profits on coal-fired power plants that were imprudently built and are now slated for shutdown; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City’s opposition to Wisconsin Electric Power Company’s and Wisconsin Gas LLC’s joint application to increase energy rates is reaffirmed; and, be it
