Title

Analysis

This resolution authorizes the City Clerk to expend up to $50,000 from the MKE Community Excellence Fund Special Purpose Account for various events and initiatives in 2023. 

Body

Whereas, The purpose of the MKE Community Excellence Fund is to provide resources to support community events that promote peace and violence prevention with the intention that allocations from the SPA will be matched by contributions from local organizations; and

 

Whereas, Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of Blacks in U.S. history; and

 

Whereas, Hispanic Heritage Month provides opportunities to the community celebrate and learn about the cultural contributions and economic impact of the fastest-growing demographic in the region; and

 

Whereas, Girls’ Day @ City Hall presents young women of high-school and middle-school age to learn from strong female role models in political leadership positions as well as careers in public service; and

 

Whereas, Bronzeville Week is a celebration showcasing the history, culture, art, and commerce in the Bronzeville Cultural and Entertainment District; and

 

Whereas, Juneteenth Day is the oldest recognized celebration observing the freedom of African-Americans from the bonds of slavery in the United States, and is a historic milestone in the fight for civil rights; and

 

Whereas, Hip-hop Week MKE aims to highlight Hip-Hop’s legacy as an agent of artistic progression, community building and social change; and

 

Whereas, Hip-Hop Week MKE focuses on financial literacy, civic engagement, voter registration and healthy living; and

 

Whereas, Hip-Hop Week MKE seeks to promote partnership with schools, local and national community groups to use Hip-Hop as a tool to teach youth and adults about financial literacy, political awareness and health issues affecting the city population; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City Clerk is directed to expend up to $50,000 from the MKE Community Excellence Fund Special Purpose Account (0001 1310 S246 006300) in the following amounts for payment or reimbursement of expenses related to 2023 events:

 

               Black History Month                              Up to $  5,000

               Girls Day @ City Hall                              Up to $12,000

               Bronzeville Week                                              Up to $12,000

               Juneteenth Day                                             Up to $  5,000

               Hip Hop Week                                             Up to $10,000

               Hispanic Heritage Month               Up to $  6,000

 

; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the amount paid or reimbursed from the MKE Community Excellence Fund for each event shall be matched by contributions from local organizations for that event.
