Body
Whereas, The State of Wisconsin currently levies an excise tax of $0.309 per gallon of motor vehicle fuel based on terminal receipts and imports of motor vehicle fuel into the state; and
Whereas, The cost of this excise tax is passed on directly to retail motor vehicle fuel buyers in terms of higher prices at the retail pump; and
Whereas, Recent retail price increases for motor vehicle fuel significantly burden Milwaukee residents, especially the economically disadvantaged who are least able to absorb the additional cost; and
Whereas, High motor vehicle fuel prices increase inflationary pressure in the economy and impede economic growth; and
Whereas, A temporary suspension of the Wisconsin’s motor vehicle fuel excise tax would provide relief for residents struggling to recover from the COVID pandemic and help stimulate economic growth; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division is directed to seek introduction and passage of State legislation temporarily suspending the State’s excise tax on motor vehicle fuel; and, be it
Further Resolved, That Common Council Resolution File Number 200668 is amended by inserting the following item in the document attached to the file and identified as “2020-2021 Leg. Package - Detailed Proposals”:
