Analysis
This resolution designates “The Wonder of Life” mural by artist Tia Richardson, at the intersection of Locust Street and Fond du Lac Avenue, as an official City project. In addition, the resolution authorizes the City Clerk’s Office to accept and expend donations supporting the mural’s completion.
Body
Whereas, Public art adds value, engenders pride and creates a sense of identity for communities; and
Whereas, Mural artist Tia Richardson is a Milwaukee native and alumna of Milwaukee Area Technical Collage; and
Whereas, Ms. Richardson has painted over 50 murals, most of which are located in Milwaukee; and
Whereas, In 2018, Ms. Richardson was honored as one of the City of Milwaukee Arts Board Artists of the Year; and
Whereas, Ms. Richardson’s mural at 1320 W. Burnham Street, painted in collaboration with students and residents in the Mitchell Street and Muskego Way neighborhoods, was selected for the Mayor’s 2021 Design Awards; and
Whereas, The intersection of Locust Street and Fond du Lac Avenue is located under a railroad overpass that creates a dark and uninviting environment for pedestrians; and
Whereas, “The Wonder of Life” mural will greatly enhance the intersection’s aesthetic appeal, creating an asset to the Sherman Park and Park West neighborhoods; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council designates “The Wonder of Life” mural at the intersection of Locust Street and Fond du Lac Avenue as an official City project; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the City Clerk’s Office is authorized to accept private contributions to support “The Wonder of Life” mural project, and to expend such funds for this purpose; and, be it
Further Resolved, That upon receipt and deposit of these funds, the City Comptroller is directed to establish a special account within the budget for the expenditure of such monies.
