Title

Resolution relating to City policy for e-mail use.

Analysis

This resolution establishes City policy for e-mail use, and authorizes the Chief Information Officer to implement the policy.

Body

Whereas, The City Information Management Committee is responsible for policy and management of the City’s information resources; and

 

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee encourages its employees to use e-mail for work related communications such as providing services to citizens in support of the City’s mission; and

 

Whereas, E-mail received or sent by City employees generates approximately 87,000,000 messages annually; and

 

Whereas, E-mail messages can pose a risk to City information resources by exposing these resources to spam, viruses, and malware; and

 

Whereas, The City incurs considerable risk as e-mail content becomes recognized as public record; and  

 

Whereas, The City Information Management Committee prepared the “City of Milwaukee E-Mail Use Policy,” which was approved by the committee on September 10, 2009; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the “City of Milwaukee E-Mail Use Policy,” a copy of which is attached to this file, is adopted as City policy, and the Chief Information Officer is authorized to create standards and guidelines to implement the policy.
