Analysis
This resolution expresses the City’s opposition to allowing a person who has a license to carry a concealed weapon to possess a firearm in a vehicle on the grounds of a school and directs the Department of Administration-Intergovernmental Relations Division to lobby in opposition of Wisconsin Assembly Bill 495 and Senate Bill 484.
Body
Whereas, Current state law generally prohibits an individual from possessing a firearm on the grounds of a school; and

Whereas, As of July 2021, there have been at least 43 incidents where firearms were discharged on school grounds in the United States, resulting in 19 injuries and 12 deaths; and

Whereas, Wisconsin Assembly Bill 495 and Senate Bill 484 pending in the Wisconsin Legislature would allow a person who has a license to carry a concealed weapon to possess a firearm in a vehicle on the grounds of a school; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City of Milwaukee opposes allowing a person who has a license to carry a concealed weapon to possess a firearm in a vehicle on the grounds of a school; and, be it

Further Resolved, The Department of Administration - Intergovernmental Relations Division is directed to lobby in opposition to allowing a person who has a license to carry a concealed weapon to possess a firearm in a vehicle on the grounds of a school (AB 495/SB 484); and, be it

Further Resolved, That Common Council Resolution file Number 200668 is amended by inserting the following item in the document attached to the file and identified a “2020-2021 Leg Package - Detailed Proposals”
