Analysis
This resolution authorizes the City Attorney to enter into a Contract for Legal Services with the Cade Law Group LLC to represent the City of Milwaukee in relation to former Police Chief Alfonso Morales’s claims against the City.
Body
Whereas, According to s. 304-23 of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances, retention of any attorney or law firm outside of the City Attorney’s permanent staff shall first be authorized by the Common Council; and

Whereas, On February 9, 2021, the Common Council adopted Resolution File Number 201380, waiving the Cade Law Group LLC’s conflicts of interest related to three matters it currently has pending against the City of Milwaukee; and

Whereas, On August 6, 2020, the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners demoted former Police Chief Alfonso Morales to the rank of Captain and Mr. Morales subsequently retired; and

Whereas, On September 8, 2020, Mr. Morales filed a lawsuit in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, Alfonso Morales v. City of Milwaukee, et al 2020CV005352; and

Whereas, On December 18, 2020, Milwaukee County Circuit Court reversed the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners’ decision to demote Mr. Morales; and

Whereas, Due to the Court’s finding that Mr. Morales’s demotion was improper, the City anticipates further claims being brought by Mr. Morales against the City; and

Whereas, The City desires to retain The Cade Law Group LLC to represent its interests in future claims brought by Mr. Morales against the City; now, therefore, be it
