Minutes note: Ms. Carlen Hatala said the nomination was submitted by Joe Paterick. The property recently changed hands; there was a rear addition put on in 1964 and a carriage barn from 1894 on the property. Cement asbestos was added in 1950 and the front porch enclosed in 1977 with the oiginal porch roof being retained. The term "puddler's cottage" was used for this type of building, irrespective of the employment of the owner. The single-story house has few ornamental attachments. The carriage barn was re-built in 1894 and then re-built by a subsequent owner; carriage barns are very rare. All owners had associations with the Milwaukee Iron Company and its various mergers. Ms. Hatala provided information on the first owner; the mill work plant was closed in 1929 and demolished in 1939. Ms. Hatala said this house is indicative of a worker's cottage, a type which is rapidly disappearing. These houses were constructed with a concrete base with no original basement. The house meets the criteria for e-1 and e-5 for historic designation. Ms. Keating Kahn moved, seconded by Ms. Peltz, to open the public hearing. There were no objections. Joseph Paterick - nominator - tried to buy the property earlier to restore the property, but he couldn't get a loan. He is concerned that another house is being proposed to be built and the carriage barn is not being maintained. Chris Koneck - property owner - he plans to improve the property so it can be rented - interior work and the vinyl siding has only recently started blowing off. The vacant land to the north could be developed. Currently they want to replace 5 leaking windows to match existing windows and replace the missing/damaged siding. Ryan Konck - there was a property on the open space to the north, which was demolished and a building may be built there. He lives in Bayview and manages the other properties he and Mr. Koneck own in Bayview. Jeremy Ebersoll - Milwaukee Preservation Alliance supports the designation. Ms. Peltz moved, seconded by Ms. Keating Kahn, to close the public hearing. There were no objections. Designation approved based upon e-1 and e-5.
