Whereas, Trailblazer and former Milwaukee Alderwoman Vel Phillips achieved many “firsts” in her career, including being the first African American woman to graduate from UW-Madison law school, first on the Milwaukee Common Council, first on the bench, and first in statewide office; and
Whereas, The State Capitol and Executive Residence Board is expected to consider a formal proposal to erect a statue of Vel Phillips on the Capitol grounds; and
Whereas, Gov. Tony Evers created an advisory committee earlier this month to work on the statue proposal; and
Whereas, The sculpture would be the first at the Capitol to honor a person of color; and
Whereas, Representation of people of color at the Capitol is an important aspect of honoring the work and contribution of people of color to the community and fabric of society; and
Whereas, The success and achievements of Vel Phillips are a meaningful representation of the contributions of many members of the African-American communities throughout the state; and
Whereas, The erection of a statue of Vel Phillips at the Capitol offers a symbol of hope, courage, dedication, and healing to the people of Wisconsin, which is needed at this time in history and reaching long into the future; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City of Milwaukee supports the erection of a statue in honor of Ald. Vel Phillips at the Wisconsin State Capitol; and, be it
