This resolution directs the Information Technology Management Division to work with the Department of Administration - Intergovernmental Relations Division, to provide broadband access to underserved areas of the city.

Whereas, Many governmental and educational services are accessed using the internet; and
Whereas, Many people access the internet at schools and public libraries; and
Whereas, Many school buildings and public libraries are closed because of the coronavirus pandemic; and
Whereas, The coronavirus pandemic has required many people to telecommute in unprecedented numbers; and
Whereas, Broadband access at home is increasingly necessary for work and educational purposes; and
Whereas, Areas of the city are underserved by broadband internet access; and
Whereas, Current state statutes limit the ability of the City to directly provide or subsidize broadband internet service; and
Whereas, Other public and private entities are exploring ways to provide internet access to under-served communities; and
Whereas, A coordinated approach to providing internet access to low-income and under-served areas will maximize the use of limited resources, now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, the Information Technology Management Division is directed to work with the Department of Administration - Intergovernmental Relations Division and other agencies to create and coordinate a plan to ensure citywide internet access; and, be it
