Analysis

This resolution designates June 15-19, 2020, as Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week in the City of Milwaukee to focus attention on the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the City, nation and African-American community.

Body

Whereas, The nation’s 101 Historically Black Colleges and Universities have provided excellent educational opportunities for people of color for nearly 200 years; and

Whereas, Historically Black Colleges and Universities gave African-American students the opportunity to explore their passions and talents, even as parts of society denied their personhood; and

Whereas, Historically Black Colleges and Universities are an indelible part of African-American history and identity worthy of support and preservation; and

Whereas, Historically Black Colleges and Universities played an indispensable part in creating the nation’s African-American middle class; and

Whereas, Alumni of Historically Black Colleges and Universities have made irreplaceable contributions to the artistic, civic and economic life of Milwaukee and the nation; and

Whereas, Historically Black Colleges and Universities enroll more than 300,000 students annually and account for 9% of all African-American college students; and

Whereas, Historically Black Colleges and Universities make up just 3 percent of colleges and universities, yet produce 27% of all African-American students with bachelor's degrees in the country in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields; and

Whereas, Historically Black Colleges and Universities contribute $14.8 billion to the economy annually; and

Whereas, Historically Black Colleges and Universities remind us of the nation’s continuing struggles with fairness and equality, and the remarkable bravery, determination and ingenuity shown by people of color in the face of those challenges; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council designates June 15-19, 2020, as Historically Black Colleges and Universities Week in the City of Milwaukee to focus attention on the importance of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities to the City, nation and African-American community; and, be it
