Title

Substitute resolution supporting U.S. House Resolution 109 recognizing the duty of the Federal Government to create a Green New Deal.

Analysis

This resolution expresses the City’s support of U.S. House Resolution 109 introduced by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., recognizing the duty of the Federal Government to create a Green New Deal.

Body

Whereas, U.S. House Resolution 109 recognizing the duty of the Federal Government to create a Green New Deal (Green New Deal) is a nonbinding resolution which will establish no new government programs; and

 

Whereas, The goals of the 10-year national mobilization effort proposed by the Green New Deal include:

 

1.                     Meeting 100% of United States power demand through clean, renewable and zero-emission energy sources.

2.                     Upgrading all existing United States buildings and new construction to achieve maximum energy efficiency, water efficiency, safety, affordability, comfort and durability.

3.                     Elimination of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture while supporting family farms and promoting universal access to healthy food;

4.                     An overhaul of the transportation systems to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, including investment in zero-emission vehicle infrastructure and manufacture, clean, affordable and accessible public transportation and high-speed rail.

5.                     A guaranteed job for every American with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations and retirement security.

6.                     Provision of high-quality health care, affordable, safe and adequate housing, economic security and access to clean water, clean air, healthy and affordable food and nature for all people in the United States.

7.                     Provision of resources, training and high-quality education, including higher education, to all people of the United States with a focus on frontline and vulnerable communities, so those communities may be full and equal participants in the Green New Deal.

 

; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City of Milwaukee supports U.S. House Resolution 109 recognizing the duty of the Federal Government to create a Green New Deal; and, be it 

 

Further Resolved, That the City Clerk shall forward copies of this resolution to members of the City of Milwaukee’s delegation to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.
