Analysis

This resolution directs the Milwaukee Fire Department and all other City departments not to place any placard or other signage on the exterior of any building that relates to the vacancy status of the building. 

Body

Whereas, The Milwaukee Fire Department has implemented a policy of placing placards on vacant buildings that indicate the buildings are vacant; and

Whereas, Labeling a building as vacant is likely to increase the incidence of vandalism, stripping the building, squatting, and other illegal behaviors; and

Whereas, A placard indicating a building is vacant may mischaracterize a neighborhood as blighted; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Milwaukee Fire Department, Department of Neighborhood Services, Department of Public Works, and all other departments are prohibited from placing placards and any other signage on the exterior of any building that relates to the vacancy status of the building.
