Minutes note: Ms. Carlen Hatala said an initial application was withdrawn by the local alderman and a new application was submitted by Mr. Ebersol. The building was up for sale and the neighbors were concerned the building would be modified substantially. Ms. Hatala presented the history of the Kneisler family. The parcel was bought by the family in 1890, but the building wasn't constructed until 1893. Kneisler's was a Schlitz-tied house and due to the angle of the streets, two facades can be seen at the same time. The architect of this building is unknown. The current windows are smaller and the storefront was changed in the 1970s. Vinyl siding and aluminum trim were put on last year. The vinyl siding covered over some of the clapboard and fascia details as well as detail work on the front. Asphalt shingles were also applied over wood shingles, probably done in the past couple of years. Two generations ran the tavern until 2006 when it was sold out of the family. HCI bought the building in January 2018. Staff recommends temporary designation based upon e-1, e-5 and e-9. Mr. Jarosz moved to open for a public hearing David Griffith -HCI - owner is opposed - they are the real estate owners and are looking to lease the property and are wondering why all the exterior work was done over the past couple of years and there was no public uprising. They don't even know what business will be occupying the space. They are looking to add more windows on the Estes Ave. side. There is severe rotting in the turrets and there are also significant interior issues. Wayne Youngquist - Bayview - this needs to be seen in the context of a unique community, although you don't want to see it go bankrupt, either. Nancy Tottey - former president of the Bayview Historical Society - an important part of the neighborhood John Ebersol - nominator - wants something done so it can't be altered any more than it has already been altered. Temporary designation granted based upon s. 320-21-3e-1, e-5 and e-9.
