Title

Resolution approving the conversion from four lanes to two lanes of traffic on West State Street between North 35th Street and a point west of North 47th Street.

 

Analysis

This resolution approves the conversion from four lanes to two lanes of traffic on West State Street between North 35th Street and a point west of North 47th Street.  The current configuration of two lanes of traffic in east and west directions will be converted to one lane of traffic in each direction with a bicycle lane and left turn lane added.  The request has been submitted by MillerCoors to decrease traffic speeds and increase pedestrian and bicycle safety. 

 

Body

Whereas, MillerCoors has proposed the conversion from four lanes to two lanes of traffic on West State Street between North 35th Street and a point west of North 47th Street; and

 

Whereas, The conversion to one lane of traffic in each direction is proposed as a traffic calming measure to increase pedestrian and bicycle safety; and

 

Whereas, The planned improvements include installation of concrete traffic islands and restriping traffic and bicycle lanes; and

 

Whereas, MillerCoors is responsible for maintenance of specialized streetscape improvements and will be responsible for maintenance of additional improvements, including concrete traffic islands; and

 

Whereas, An amendment to the Maintenance Agreement between the City of Milwaukee and the MillerCoors has been prepared and is attached to the file and specifies which improvements the company will maintain and which will be maintained by the City; and

 

Whereas, The City may elect to convert State Street back to four lanes of traffic if needed based on changing conditions or increased traffic counts at MillerCoors expense; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, That the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee hereby approves the conversion from four lanes to two lanes of traffic of West State Street between North 35th Street and a point west of North 47th Street; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That West State Street will be converted back to four lanes of traffic if the Commissioner of Public Works deems it necessary; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Commissioner of Public Works is authorized to make minor, non-substantive changes to the agreement prior to its execution.
