This resolution expresses the City of Milwaukee’s opposition to President Donald J. Trump’s decision to suspend the immigration program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.

Body
Whereas, The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which currently protects nearly 800,000 undocumented immigrants from deportation, is a program President Barack Obama created to allow immigrants brought to the United States as children to remain in the country; and

Whereas, The DACA program grants two-year stays and work permits to undocumented immigrants brought to the United States before their 16th birthday who have attended school or joined the military and have not committed any serious crimes; and

Whereas, Children who are brought into the United States do not have the ability to make a decision about where they live while they are children because they go where their parents take them; and

Whereas, Many undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children have become taxpaying adults and productive members of society who have families of their own and contribute to society; and

Whereas, Many people who arrived in the United States as children do not know any other home or have a place to return if they were to face deportation, and their families would be ripped apart; and

Whereas, More than 97% of the people who were brought into the United States as children are in school or working, and 5% are entrepreneurs who have started their own businesses; now, therefore, be it
