Title

Substitute Resolution naming the playground at 17th and Vine Streets “Johnnie Mae Phillips Park.”

Analysis

This resolution names the unnamed, City-owned and maintained playground at 17th and Vine Streets “Johnnie Mae Phillips Park” and authorizes and directs the Department of Public Works to provide appropriate signage.

Body

Whereas, The playground at 17th and Vine Streets currently does not have a name, making it difficult for police to respond quickly when needed; and

 

Whereas, Naming and providing a sign for this playground would increase its visibility in the neighborhood, thereby potentially drawing more area residents to the area; and

 

Whereas, Naming this playground and placing a sign with the name near the intersection of 17th and Vine Streets would indicate the presence of a playground and the proximity of children, thereby alerting drivers of the need to slow down and be aware of children playing in the area; and

 

Whereas, Johnnie Mae Phillips spearheaded the development of and was involved in the initial planning and construction of this park at its inception in the early 1970s; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the playground at 17th and Vine Streets is named “Johnnie Mae Phillips Park”; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That the Department of Public Works is authorized and directed to complete the playground signage and installation.
