Title
Motion urging the Mayor to exclude all furlough days for sworn police officers from the 2016 Proposed City Budget.
Analysis
This motion urges the Mayor to exclude all furlough days for sworn police officers from the 2016 Proposed City Budget.
Body
Whereas, City budgets for the past 3 years, including 2015, have required Milwaukee sworn police officers be furloughed and off-duty for 3 days during each year at an annual savings to the City of $1.5 million; and
Whereas, Removing police officers from duty through mandatory furloughs leaves fewer officers to protect the welfare of city residents and has on some level contributed to recent increases of violent crime in the city; and
Whereas, The budget savings gained by furloughing sworn police officers are too insignificant to counter-balance the threat to personal safety created by having fewer police officers on-duty to protect residents; and
Whereas, Continuing to furlough sworn police officers after furloughs for all other City employees have been rescinded is inconsistent with the basic principle of equal treatment of all City employees; and
Whereas, Public safety in the City of Milwaukee and the security of residents would be enhanced if more sworn police officers were on-duty, and a sense of fair play reestablished if furloughs for sworn police officers are excluded from the 2016 Proposed City Budget; now, therefore,
It is Moved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Mayor is urged to exclude all furlough days for sworn police officers from the 2016 Proposed City Budget.
