Title

Analysis
This resolution expresses the City of Milwaukee's opposition to the proposed $300 million reduction in funding to the University of Wisconsin System in the 2015-17 State  Executive Budget.  This resolution also calls upon the Legislature to restore funding to the University System as recommended by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.
Body
Whereas, Governor Scott Walker proposes a reduction to University of Wisconsin System funding by $300 million over the biennium in his 2015-17 State Executive Budget; and
 
Whereas, This reduction results in a reduction of $40 million to UW-Milwaukee over the next 2 years; and
 
Whereas, UW-Milwaukee educates more Wisconsin students than any other UW campus; and
 
Whereas, Ninety percent of UW-Milwaukee students are Wisconsin residents; and
 
Whereas, Thirty-nine percent of undergraduate students at UW-Milwaukee are first- generation college students; and
 
Whereas, Eighty percent of UW-Milwaukee alumni remain in the state to live and work; and
 
Whereas, In 2012-13, the most recent academic year for which full economic impact data is available, UW-Milwaukee received $124 million from the state and had an economic impact of more than $1.5 billion on the Wisconsin economy; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council expresses its opposition to the proposed reduction in funding to the University of Wisconsin System; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the Common Council calls upon the Legislature to restore funding to the University System as recommended by the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents.
