This resolution assigns the honorary street name of "Rev. Dr. James G. White" to West Wright Street from North Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive to North 4th Street in the 6th Aldermanic District.
Body
Whereas, Rev. Dr. James G. White passed away on August 28, 2013, the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom; and
 
Whereas, Rev. Dr. White assembled a talented and dedicated group of community activists to revive the Harambee Community Vision and Mission originally crafted to rebuild a community torn asunder by the 1968 assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; and
 
Whereas, Rev. Dr. White was instrumental in establishing WestCare Wisconsin which has become an umbrella service provider for the Harambee community offering 8 different programs to aid the community; and
 
Whereas, Rev. Dr. White's lifelong advocacy for fair housing, social justice, economic development and equal opportunity for the disadvantaged verily typified the essence of Harambee - a Swahili command to "work and pull together" for the good of the group; and
 
Whereas, The Harambee Community Center at 335 West Wright Street in so many way exemplifies Rev. Dr. White's commitment to serve his community; and
 
Whereas, The honorary naming of West Wright Street between North Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive  and North 4th Street as "Rev. Dr. James G. White" will serve as a fitting tribute to Rev. Dr. White: and
 
Whereas, The Common Council finds the honorary naming of West Wright Street from North Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive to North 4th Street as "Rev. Dr. James G. White" meets the code criteria; now, therefore, be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the honorary name of "Rev. Dr. James G. White" shall be assigned to West Wright Street from North Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Drive to North 4th Street; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That signage for this honorary street naming comply with design specifications set by the Department of Public Works; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the petitioner has requested suitable honorary street-naming signage be fabricated and installed by the Department of Public Works at a cost to be paid in full by the petitioner; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the Department of Public Works shall fabricate and install signage for this honorary street-naming within 90 days of adoption of this resolution in compliance with s. 113-3; and, be it
 
Further Resolved, That the petitioner shall notify the Department of Public Works whenever signage for this honorary street-naming needs to be replaced and the petitioner shall fully reimburse the City for any replacement.
