Analysis
This resolution authorizes the Commissioner of Public Works to install rectangular rapid flashing beacons on West Lapham Boulevard at South 9th Street with funding from the Department of Public Works Traffic Capital Improvement Program.
Body
Whereas, Rectangular rapid flashing beacons have been demonstrated to increase safety, particularly on median divided roadways, by increasing number of vehicles yielding to pedestrians crossing using a high intensity alternating flash pattern when activated; and
Whereas, The need for enhanced pedestrian safety at the crossings on West Lapham Boulevard at South 9th Street have been identified due to conflicts between a high number of pedestrians and school children crossing and vehicular traffic; and
Whereas, The installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons at the intersection of West Lapham Boulevard and South 9th Street will enhance safety for pedestrians crossing West Lapham Boulevard at South 9th Street; and
Whereas, The estimated cost of the installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons is $40,000, and is included in the Department of Public Works Traffic Capital Improvement Program approved under Common Council File Number 141200; and
Whereas, The installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons at West Lapham Boulevard and South 9th Street is scheduled for spring 2015; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee that the Commissioner of Public Works is authorized to install rectangular rapid flashing beacons on West Lapham Boulevard at South 9th Street using funding from the Department of Public Works capital fund.
