Analysis
This resolution authorizes City officials to issue a special event permit to Milwaukee Marathon, Inc. for the inaugural Milwaukee Marathon.
 
Body
Whereas, Milwaukee is one of very few major Midwestern American cities that does not host a large marathon distance running event; and
 
Whereas, Cities such as Cincinnati, St. Louis, Detroit, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh all host marathon running events that attract between 15,000 and 25,000 runners; and
 
Whereas, The Lakefront Marathon, held each October, attracts only about 2,000 runners, with very little of the course within the City of Milwaukee; and
 
Whereas, Milwaukee Marathon, Inc. has proposed a spring marathon entirely within the borders of the City of Milwaukee; and
 
Whereas, Milwaukee Marathon, Inc. believes that between 5,000-10,000 runners would be attracted to a Milwaukee Marathon in its' first year, with a goal of 20,000 runners within five years; and
 
Whereas, The economic impact of a such an event would be significant, with visitors utilizing Milwaukee's hotels, restaurants, and tourist attractions; and
 
Whereas, The inaugural Milwaukee Marathon would take place on the last Sunday of April 2015, starting and finishing at the lakefront; and
 
Whereas, Milwaukee Marathon, Inc. will be responsible for all required traffic control in accordance with City standards and
 
Whereas, Milwaukee Marathon, Inc. will work with police, transit, businesses, neighborhoods, and churches on or near the route to mitigate issues or concerns that may arise; now, therefore be it
 
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee that the appropriate City officials are herby authorized to issue a special event permit to Milwaukee Marathon, Inc. for the inaugural Milwaukee Marathon.
