Title

Substitute resolution relating to the removal of snow from bus stops and curb cuts.

 

Analysis

Currently, The Department of Public Works (DPW) mechanically removes excessive snow from crosswalks and Milwaukee County Transit system bus stops. This substitute resolution directs DPW to prepare and submit a plan to the Common Council within 30 days specifying how it will remove all snow and ice from curb cuts and Milwaukee County bus stops by hand shoveling or other methods within 24 hours after the snow and ice has ceased to fall.

 

Body

Whereas, The Department of Public Works (DPW) currently mechanically removes snow from bus stops; and

 

Whereas, Mechanically removing snow from bus stops is generally not an adequate method of snow removal to meet the needs of Milwaukee County Transit riders, especially those riders who are disabled; and

 

Whereas Under s. 116-8-1 of the Milwaukee Code, DPW is responsible for the removal of excess amounts of snow placed in crosswalks by city plows or other mechanical devices; and

 

Whereas DPW currently mechanically removes excessive snow placed in crosswalks; and

 

Whereas The mechanical removal snow from the City’s crosswalks does not adequately remove snow and ice from the city’s cross walks and impedes pedestrians from crossing the city’s streets, especially those pedestrians with disabilities, including those using wheelchairs; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Department of Public Works directed to prepare and submit a plan to the Common Council within 30 days specifying how it will remove all snow and ice from curb cuts and Milwaukee County bus stops by hand shoveling or other methods within 24 hours after the snow and ice has ceased to fall.
