Title

Resolution authorizing the City Engineer to apply for three Safe Routes to School Program grants.

Analysis

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is soliciting applications for funds under the Safe Routes to School Program.  The program is intended to get more children in kindergarten through 8th grades walking or biking to school rather than riding in busses or cars.  Successful grant applications will be funded 100 percent by the grant program.  The Department of Public Works intends to submit three applications.

Body

Whereas, The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is soliciting applications for funds under the Safe Routes to School Program; and

 

Whereas, The program is intended to encourage children in kindergarten through 8th grade to walk or bike to school; and

 

Whereas, The Department of Public Works (DPW) has identified three locations for infrastructure related projects; and

 

Whereas, DPW intends to submit applications for the following projects:

 

1.  21st Street School

Curb extensions and a new traffic signal at West Center Street and North 21st Street.

 

2.  Hopkins School

Neighborhood traffic circles.

 

3.  Sherman School

Student drop-off plan and school zone signage improvements.

 

; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the City Engineer is authorized to submit applications for the Safe Routes to School Program for the following locations:

 

1.  21st Street School

2.  Hopkins School

3.  Sherman School

 

; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, That any successful grant projects will be brought to the Common Council for approval to enter into Project Agreements.
