Body
Whereas, Dr. James Cameron, in 1930, at age 16 survived a lynching in Marion, Indiana; and
Whereas, As a result of this experience, he dedicated his life to promoting civil rights, racial peace, unity and equality; and
Whereas, Dr. James Cameron founded America’s Black Holocaust Museum, in 1988, to document racial injustices suffered by people of African heritage; and
Whereas, America’s Black Holocaust Museum is located at 2233 North 4th Street, just south of West North Avenue; and
Whereas, Section 113-3 of the Code of Ordinances provides for a procedure for the assignment of honorary street names; and
Whereas, Section 113-3-6 specifies criteria for the use of the names of individuals as honorary street names; and
Whereas, The Common Council finds that the honorary naming of West North Avenue, from North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to North 7th Street, as “Dr. James Cameron” would for the reasons specified above meet the criteria of s. 113-3-6; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the honorary name “Dr. James Cameron” is assigned to the segment of West North Avenue, from North Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to North 7th Street; and, be it
Further Resolved, That this honorary street naming shall comply with design specifications determined by the Department of Public Works; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the petitioner has requested that the Department of Public Works fabricate and install 7 honorary street name signs in conjunction...
