Analysis

This resolution requests the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to install converging chevron pavement marking patterns on northbound and southbound I-94/43 at the Plainfield Curve.

 

The City Clerk shall forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

Body

Whereas, Motorists regularly exceed the posted speed limit of 50 miles per hour on

I-94/43 at or near the Plainfield Curve; and

 

Whereas, There were 3 semi-trailer truck accidents and one motor vehicle accident on I-94/43 at or near the Plainfield Curve during a 2-week period beginning on May 8, 2006, and ending on May 21, 2006; and

 

Whereas, The Wisconsin Department of Transportation installed converging chevron pavement marking patterns to the approach of the northbound traffic lanes on the I-94 approach to the westbound ramp to I-894 in May 1999; and

 

Whereas, According to an evaluation of the chevron installation prepared for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in July 2003, the markings caused drivers, on average, to reduce their speed by nearly 15 miles per hour at the ramp; and

 

Whereas, The markings also led to a reduction in total crashes, including zero semi-trailer truck rollovers; now, therefore, be it

 

Resolved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council requests the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to install converging chevron pavement marking patterns on northbound and southbound I-94/43 at the Plainfield Curve; and, be it

 

Further Resolved, The City Clerk shall forward a copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
