Analysis
This motion approves amendment of the charter school contract between the City and the Academy of Learning by providing a 3-year extension to the current contract so as to permit the academy to obtain favorable financing to construct a second school building at its 15th and Center Streets campus.
Body
Whereas, In Common Council File Number 021365, passed on January 22, 2003, the Common Council authorized the Academy of Learning and Leadership to operate as a Common Council charter elementary school and approved a 5-year contract (2003-2004 through 2007-2008 school years) between the City and the Academy of Learning and Leadership; and

Whereas, The contract recognized that by the end of the contract term in 2007-2008 school year, the Academy of Learning and Leadership may seek to operate 3 elementary school buildings at its 15th and Center Streets campus; and

Whereas, The Academy of Learning and Leadership now wishes to construct a second school building at said campus; and

Whereas, The Academy of Learning and Leadership has requested that its contract with the City be amended to provide a 3-year extension so as to permit the academy to obtain favorable financing to construct its second school building; and

Whereas, The Charter School Review Committee has voted to recommend that the contract between the City and the Academy of Learning and Leadership be amended to extend the contract through the 2010-2011 school year; now, therefore

It is moved, By the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, that the Common Council approves the proposed 3-year extension of the current contract between the City and the Academy of Learning and Leadership to authorize the Academy of Learning and Leadership to operate an elementary school program...
