Analysis
This resolution authorizes and directs the Department of Administration to apply for a $500,000 “Saving America’s Treasures Grant” from the U.S. Department of the Interior - National Park Service and National Trust for Historic Preservation. These grant funds would be used to support the terra cotta replacement component of the City Hall restoration project.
Body
Whereas, Milwaukee City Hall is a National Historic Landmark of local and national cultural, historical and architectural significance; and
Whereas, A $77-million, multi-year program to restore the exterior facades and roofs of City Hall is currently underway, with project completion anticipated in 2008; and
Whereas, A significant portion of the project cost - over $6.3 million - is for the purchase and installation of new terra cotta components for City Hall; and
Whereas, The City Hall restoration project, including its terra cotta replacement component, appears to be eligible for a U.S. Department of the Interior - National Park Service and National Trust for Historic Preservation “Saving America’s Treasures Grant”; and
Whereas, This grant requires a 50% grantee match, which the City will meet through its commitment of $77 million to the City Hall restoration project in general and $6.3 million for terra cotta replacement in particular; and
